This might not fall under the 5th rule for "How do I learn Japanese?", "Motivation?" or "What should I learn next?". But I couldn't find what I was looking for on the internet so I have decided to ask here.
Most of the content on the internet I find about Japanese is for people with a higher skill in the language than I have. Japanese was something I have started and stopped learning a dozen times in my life. I keep struggling with getting over this initial hill before knowing enough to just start immersing myself in the language.
I hear a lot about people talking how learning Japanese is fun, but honestly it hasn't been that fun for me to learn. I imagine that's just because I haven't reached a certain point yet or I am simply doing it wrong. I find learning fun, I loved to learn to program, I love learning Kalimba, Guitar and Drawing. These things I learned on my own without friends or teachers to learn from, Something I wish I had.
But Japanese seems different to me. My learning tools I developed don't seem to work and worse I'm not really enjoying learning it which is just weird for me.
It's something I really want to do, but I guess my question is this: What activities do you do to learn Japanese early on? Or really just in general (e.g. not early on)? What do you do to learn the language?
I'm asking so I can try out a bunch and find ones that are fun. I don't have lofty plans of ever reaching N1. But I would like to get to N5 at least.

Hey folks.
I have come across multiple posts on this sub-reddit about people struggling to pull through with their mental health issues. The city and its population is transient/fast-moving, and that perhaps contributes to it or making you feel lonely. Even if you're in your Ferrari.
What also doesn't help is that a lot of counselling/therapy options aren't easily accessible - very expensive and some sections still think of asking for mental health support as 'taboo'.
Having spent quite the money from my pocket for therapy sessions (my insurance didn't cover it), I wanted to share some of the key points that have been told to me, in an effort to help others who are struggling and have found therapy out of reach for any reason.
Disclaimer: I am not a professional, and in no case is this thread meant to be a substitute for what a professional may think is the right course of action for you. You're unique and so are your issues.

  1. You are at the center
    1. Don't be hard on yourself: Don't beat yourself up with 'why' you thought/did something, or why you're still in bed. You're allowed to be sad/gloomy/depressed. Acknowledge it, but don't spiral into the 'why' blaming yourself, which brings me to the second point.
    2. Don't gaslight yourself: 'If I had done this different, things would've been much better' or 'others are going through much worse, I should be happy with what I have, I have no reason to be depressed'. NO. STOP IT. You don't need to do that. You're clearly going through something, and you don't need to put yourself down for feeling that. If you have a cough or stomach flu (not gonna write about COVID:) ), you aren't hard on yourself. Neither should you, when you are struggling with mental health.
    3. Don't let others gaslight you: This typically takes the form of others telling you 'You need to smile more' or 'Look at all the good things in your life' or 'You just need to toughen up and get going' or 'It's all in your head, you're doing this yourself'. NO. No Natasha, I know what I am feeling, and I don't need you to invalidate that. Next!
    4. Know yourself: Take a personality test at 16Personalities and see if the results match what you are and what you feel. You'll be surprised that a lot of behaviour you find 'is wrong' might just be the way your personality works, and that's absolutely fine. Also, maintain a mood-journal of how you are feeling at different times of the day, what thoughts you are having, and identify if there are any specific triggers.
  2. Nutrition
    1. Keep healthy: The 'you're what you eat' bit is quite true. Avoid junk food. Go for healthy options. Have the greens, the berries, some dark chocolate. That's not to say you shouldn't have any fried food or other guilty pleasures, but focus on the healthy ones. Go for a smoothie, or a healthy shake.
    2. Cook: This may seem like a massive task, I know. But start small. Go for a small snack/breakfast (say yay to peanut butter and toast!) before planning for something big. Small steps it is!
    3. Food For the Mind: Just as your body, keep your mind with some good nutrition. Listen to some podcasts of any topic that interests you, get some book to read (even if it is a re-read), or some mini-course at Coursera. Get off that Netflix binge in your bed. Get off that playlist that 'i-can-relate-my-pain-to' and put on some Shakira/Lil Nas-x/Cardi-B (no judgement!) and dance your heart out.
    4. Meditate: I know this is not a favorite for a lot of people, but try to get that calm by trying meditation for a while. Play a calm soothing track, close your eyes, and just focus on your breathing. Yes, you won't be 'thoughtless' and that's fine.
    5. Good Sleep: Get a good sleep, for if you're not sleeping well, then you won't function right when awake. If you are facing sleeplessness, you can take some melotonin.
    6. Keep clean: take a warm shower, and try to clean your house, your room. Again, start small. Just move the clothes thrown on the 'chair' or sofa. Take away the week-long trash from takeaways.
  3. Keep Moving
    1. Move Physically: Exercise produces endorphins. Keep moving. Go and join the gym. Go for a dance class. Go for swimming. Go for a run. Go for cycling. Get moving. Don't wait for motivation - that's temporary. Go for discipline. Start small. Go for 15 mins. Then extend it slowly.
    2. Move Socially: Reach out to your friends, someone whom you trust. Meet for a coffee/dinnedrinks or heck, even a zoom meeting. Not many friends? No problem. Join a Meetup group. I have seen fellow redditors who have met up. Be that. Don't isolate yourself. Else you will keep replaying the same scenarios
    3. Move Mentally: Right now, things might seem dark, but there's light at the end of the tunnel. Try to visualize that. Setup a small goal to begin with. I want to paint the cityscape by next week. I want to learn guitar and play for my friends in 2 months. I want to learn how to drive and get a license in 2 months. I want to learn how to bake and make some cake for my birthday. Or plan a solo backpacking trip. Just get some goals and take baby steps towards them, but have a timeline associated with it. If needed, ask some friends to even keep you accountable to that goal.
    4. Be patient: This is a slow process; it will take time to heal. Accept that, and don't beat yourself up that why things aren't improving within few days or within a week. It is not a linear journey, there are ups-and downs.
  4. Ask for help
    1. Friends/family: Reach out to some close friends/family members and engage with them. Tell them that you are healing from something, and you appreciate their support. Ask them to check-in on you, or to meet weekly or so for some activities.
    2. Professional help (Therapists): Some cases may need support from professionals. There are some things that you just can't control - the brain chemicals and their balance. Reach out to a therapist in person (e.g. American Center, Priority Group) or remote (e.g. BetterHelp), even if it is for one session.
      1. Note that a psychologist will hear you and walk you through how you can deal with you situation, whereas a psychiatrist will understand your situation and see if any treatment/medication is required. Generally, one can refer to the other since they have an understanding of what is needed.
      2. In-person sessions are generally expensive. Check if your insurance has it covered. I know that some of the therapists provide packages (e.g. some discount if you go for 5 sessions). I'f suggest to first see a few sessions if you connect with a therapist and then commit for something longer, if you think that will help you.
      3. Check if your company has an 'Employee Assistance Program' - this generally isnt explicitly mentioned in your insurance, since the providers are generally different. But do check if you have one, and reach out to them.
    3. Government helplines: I found the following - you can explore and see if you can seek some support. https://hope.hw.gov.ae/ . Their number is 800-4673.
    4. If there are thoughts you are not able to shake off, just talk to someone about it. There are plenty of people - even strangers who are willing to help
