2022.01.27 14:19 Acoasma If Catan was a video game, I would ask the devs to nerf ore-wheat-sheep
first of all, the title isn't supposed to be a rant, but rather a bold statement to encourage discussion. I am playing quite a bit of catan and am hovering around ~1300 elo in catan universe, so while I am no master I believe that I at least have some basic understanding of the game.
That out of the way, let's get to the point. After climbing the ladder, playing mostly for cities and dev cards, sometimes even in situations, when I probably shouldn't, the ore-wheet-sheep meta got a bit stale for me personally and I kind of reversed my playstyle to actively look for wood-brick set-ups that look promising. While it isn't terrible by any means, I rarely do win with it and overall it feels like the inferior playstyle and if anyone else decides/is forced to play for longest road, the winner is one of the ore-wheet-sheep players more often than not.
If you think about it, this makes sense. Especially if you play Catan with 4 people on a randomized first island, there aren't many great spots left to settle, if any at all. Often times the BEST-CASE scenario is getting a 7-8 production settlement, usually its more like 5-6. Compared to to cities it is vastly inferior, as you can basically upgrade your best settlement – usually with 10-12 production – to double its output. To top it all off, settlements do cost more to build than cities. In the beginning its 1road+settlement= 6 resources, later you usually have to build at least 2 roads, upping the cost to 8.
Beside this very basic output analysis, there is even more to it on a strategical level, that makes wood&brick inferior. First of all, roads can be a dead investment. If you get cut off, 1-2 roads will be pretty much useless and even can be detrimental later in the game, when you have to race for longest road because you only can build 15 roads total. Sure that is something to keep in mind when planning, but even if you have any eye on dev cards and are aware of this possibility, it always can happen that someone got a road-building dev card, some lucky roads or good trades to cut you off, pretty much out of the blue.
Another plus for ore-wheet-sheep is, that you only have to juggle 3 resources. It is absolutely viable to only have ore, wheat and sheep production, ignoring brick&wood altogether. you don't build many roads and settlements anyway and the few you need to build can easily be accomplished with trades(players or bank) and dev cards (stolen resources from knights, year of plenty, road building). This makes it easier to maximize production in the important resources (ore&wheat) aswell as staying below 7, because your hand only rarely is cluttered with cards you cant do anything with. worst case is, that you have to trade some.
And of course, only to add insult to the injury, if things are starting to go south for the ore-wheat-sheep player by any chance, climbing your way back into the game with a lucky dev card or blocking the player running away with the game with a knight, is obviously way easier if your whole set-up is streamlined into buying dev cards.
really the only chance to keep ore-wheet-sheep in check for a wood-brick player is, to completely cut him off from any expansion possibilities, which honestly is very hard to achieve, if the ore-wheet-sheep player knows at least a little bit what he is doing. Overall I feel like it is not even a competition between both play styles, as one is clearly better in nearly all regards.
Don't get me wrong, I still love the game and enjoy playing it, but I truly believe it would enhance the gameplay, if ore-wheet-sheep would be a tad weaker in comparison, whatever it is (more expensive cities or dev cards, maybe buffing the brick&wood playstyle by whatever...idk?)
How do you feel about this topic? What works for you, when playing wood&brick?
