2022.01.21 18:16 forever_erratic Grad students doing rotations: your final presentation is important! Please don't treat it like any old assignment! Some specific thoughts inside.

Hi all,
I'm a "permanent" researcher in an academic lab. Not a postdoc (anymore) or PI, though I kind of swing between the postdoc role, lab manager, and mentor / grant writer. I've been doing this almost a decade, and have seen a lot of rotation presentations.
They have been getting worse recently. This is very sad, as we want everyone to succeed, but it is quite hard to imagine offering a position in a lab where we see glaring issues in the presentation--things that we expected would be previously known from undergrad science courses. So, based on things I've seen recently, here are some tips that might be helpful.

  1. Make sure your presentation has all the standard scientific parts--intro, methods, results, conclusion, future directions. These need not be in this order (often iterating methods-results-conclusion is nice in a talk), but you NEED all of them! If you are feeling low for time and feel like minimizing methods (which I'd recommend against anyways), at least have detailed methods in a slide after the end, and also know them inside and out in your head.
  2. CRITICALLY, know the motivation for the study you did. The motivation is not "because this is the project my rotation boss handed me." Don't assume everyone in the lab already knows it--we don't, and even if we heard you say it once a month ago, we've already forgotten. If you feel lost in this, use this sentence format: We wondered X because of Z, which might be important because of Y. X is the study you did, Z is why you think (scientifically) X might turn up something interesting, and Y is why this matters at a larger scope.
  3. It is fine to not fully understand what your results mean. That is science. BUT, you MUST come up with some hypotheses that are not shot down with a cursory bit of attention. A common mistake I've seen is that the control is not used in interpreting the treatment. Another common mistake is that the initial hypothesis is not referred back to when interpreting results--that is particularly embarrassing, especially when the results are in line with the hypothesis, yet the student seems confused by the results.
  4. If you talk about an analysis, please show the results. This sounds obvious, but I've seen multiple students recently talk about statistical analyses without actually showing the relevant data (i.e. they will show means but no measures of variance, or will only show a single representative sample). I need to see graphs to judge the veracity of your claims.
  5. Know some basics about the important reagents you use. Are you using a particular strain? If so, why? What makes that interesting? Are you using some antibiotic or growth factor, then why was the specific one chosen and not another? These are the sorts of lowball questions you'll get asked that an "I don't know" answer will result in no offer.
Sorry if this come off ranty, it truly comes from wanting students to improve. It is very sad when a student I enjoy having in the lab, and whom labbies have offered to help with their presentation, says no thanks, gives a shit presentation, and then must be rejected.
I guess in summary, remember that during a rotation, you are still being interviewed. The whole time, and especially when you present. Even if things have been informal in the lab, treat everyone, including yourself, with respect by putting good effort into making your rotation presentation a comprehensible scientific presentation.

2022.01.21 18:16 nzam1891 Season 9 So Far

Hey so I’m doing my first watch through of the series and I’m on season 9 and I gotta say this is a terrible season so far. The Nathan getting kidnapped storyline is so ridiculous and dragged out for too long. It’s actually making me want to not watch the rest of the series lol

2022.01.21 18:16 Arelfel Where to sell locally

Where is a good place to buy/sell items locally? I know Facebook market is usually recommended but I don’t have Facebook, and I’m not sure if Craigslist is still considered reputable. Prefer not to use eBay but I can. For reference I have a 3060ti that I’d prefer to sell locally at MSRP (screw scalpers), I’d rather hand off the item than ship it off somewhere. Any apps, websites, any recommendations would be appreciated.

2022.01.21 18:16 novideo0 Switching majors?

Too late to switch majors?
I'm at a T5-10 Ivy for CS and I'm currently doing a Humanities major with a minor in CS. The latest I can switch to CS is at the beginning of my sophomore year.
Basically, would I be screwed for finding internships in the summer after my freshman year because my major doesn't really have anything to do with CS and my CS skills are pretty...elementary? I'm counting on the prestige of my university to at least get my foot in the door so I won't be immediately dismissed for internship opportunities. But at the same time I know I would be way behind my peers who are already gunning for the same opportunities and are majoring in CS. I'm pretty worried because I'm passionate about CS but switching my majors so late will be a constant up-hill battle to catch up on material and with the rest of my classmates :/
I posted this on another account on cscareerquestions but it got removed and I didn’t have enough karma

2022.01.21 18:16 throwawayVSF Community management

Hello everyone, I have a few questions for the community.
Currently a Marketing Manager for a "classic" company, I asked myself questions about my professional future and wondered if a job as a freelance community manager could have its use in the world of adult content.
For instance, it could be managing the content posting on a regular basis, or promoting an account on social networks such as Twitter, Instagram and of course Reddit.
I've already managed several accounts related to political election, think tanks and start-ups.
Do you think there's space for this kind of business? How much would you afford to pay for this kind of service?
Thanks in advance!

2022.01.21 18:16 GodofWar_1 [16/M] hey let’s talk!

Hi, I’m looking for someone available to invest in a long term friendship. Someone to text with everyday, and call too some time. It is one of my core values in a friendship to work things out.
That being said if you wonder, my interests are reading, my favorite book is game of thrones; listening to music; genres that go from classical to classic rocks to pop, playing video games; Minecraft, EU4, and CK2 on pc. I also speak three languages, and have some lovely pets.
I’m not looking to talk to anyone in particular, other than what I just said, I want someone as friendly as I strive to be.
I’m an open person, and a fast replier, so dm me. Thank you, and hope to see you there
In another life, I will make you stay.

2022.01.21 18:16 Zestyclose_Arugula71 A little bit of Newham in Essex

There should be a Londonist article about this.
In Brentwood, where I live, around 20 miles NNE of Charing Cross, there is an estate called the East Ham Estate/Eastham Estate.
Basically, back in the 50s or 60s, Newham Council (what became Newham was still in Essex at this point) built an estate for the displaced in London out to the south of Brentwood.
The estate is still here today, though as you'd expect, most of it is now privately owned.
The estate is in the odd position of still being owned by Newham Council...despite it being thirteen miles from East Ham itself. There is a small parade of shops, a pub (The Chough) and a green.
It is one of the more deprived and rough parts of Brentwood. I imagine a lot of the residents are descendants of the original Cockneys who were sent out to live in what was then a very countryfied area. Now suburban/semi-rural.
You can still see an "estate office", with the Newham Council logo on it, along with other Newham signs.
One of the roads is called "Plashet Gardens", no doubt referencing the Plashet Park area of East Ham.
Unlike the contempoary East Ham, the East Ham Estate is as you might imagine, overwhelmingly white. As already mentioned however, this does not detract from the fact the area has pockets of deprivation.
Newham Council continue to have a special relationship with Brentwood Borough Council. Newham (much to the ire of Brentwood locals) sends lots of asylum seekers and other immigrants it gets out to Brentwood to be re-housed there rather than in Newham and the East End.
Another example in Brentwood of East London dumping what many cynics might call "problems" on the town, is the Poplar School in Hutton, which is as you migt infer from the name, a poor school set up for deprived pupils in what was then the Poplar Borough. It's now an adult education centre and a housing estate. Certainly not deprived like Poplar itself.
BT's offices on London Road in Brentwood used to be St Faith's Hospital, before that known as the Hackney Branch Institution. It was originally a workhouse for the deprived children of Shoreditch.
Not sure of there are of any boroughs who have this situation, interesting to know.
