2022.01.24 11:57 Common-Amphibian7808 Sta304 confusion, help pls
Hi, so I’m confused about the tutorials and quizzes. Prof said we can choose to do one or the other right? I see people talking about gathering data etc., what exactly is that for? I also see people building websites, is that part of a tutorial? Do I also need to do those or just to quiz?

2022.01.24 11:57 Erii_Chuu How can I change Bixby to use iTranslate instead of Bixby Translation?
Ever since I chose the Bixby translation I haven't found a way to change it to iTranslate. Bixby translation doesn't support the languages I want to use and it's super inconvenient... I tried clearing cache and data from the Bixby app im settings but it didn't let me choose again, it automatically uses Bixby translation.

Is someone not picking up poop in front of your house? Is there an off leash dog in your neighborhood with a clueless owner? Did someone bring an out of control dog to the off-leash park? Is your neighbor walking uncomfortably close to you with an untrained dog? Here is where you can dump out your feelings and frustrations about these or whatever other topics you wish!
Just as a friendly reminder, the same rules regarding conduct in the general sub apply here as well.

2022.01.24 11:57 mettuo I Still Don't Believe Neck Pours Exist
Before I even begin I'd like to point out I know if this post gets any traction the comment section will be FILLED with people and their anecdotal evidence about how they know the neck pour is real and they can taste it and how I'm probably some clown troll, but if you are even slightly open to the possibility that not everything you hear is true, this post if for you.
I don't believe neck pours exist (or frankly that the bottle changes at all while you drink it until the last 5% roughly), and these are the reasons why:
Reason 1: This Myth is Really Really New
This was probably the most surprising thing for myself while looking into this topic, but "neck pour" as a phrase has almost never existed for the entirety of scotch/whisk(e)y history. The term has only really gained prominence over the last 5 years or so and now is absolutely everywhere. If neck pours existed and were so universally obvious, why are people only able to taste it now in the last five years? Did people just not have taste buds before say, 2015? Why did no one realize this was a thing until someone else told them on the internet it was a thing and now everyone can taste it? Seems fishy to me.
Reason 2: Whisky Tastes Different Every Time You Drink it Anyway
Every person really into whisky understands that what you've eaten/drunk before you try any particular whisky will change the flavour. We all agree don't start a tasting with an Octomore and then switch to Glenmorangie 10. Our pallets are really sensitive and are easily influenced by the flavours of the last thing we have consumed, everyone agrees on this, yet despite all being in agreement that the way we taste things on a daily changes, everyone seems absolutely certain it is the WHISK(E)Y that is changing as they go through the bottle, not their infallible taste buds.
Reason 3: Your Whisky Doesn't Need New Air in the Bottle to Oxidize
One of the most popular claims for the neck pour is that there simply isn't enough oxygen in the bottle, so if you open the whisky for a while and let it breath it will oxidize a little and be much nicer. This claim is just flat out wrong. First of all, the claim in and of itself makes no sense. Oxidation is precisely what the whisky is doing for its ENTIRE maturation. We all know about how porous wood is, about how whisky can escape the barrel and evaporate for the angels share, so you better believe air can get it and out, and it does, a lot. Not only that, but the whisky is sitting in a burnt/charred/toasted cask. Applying heat to wood oxidizes it, so not only are you getting a steady flow of air into the barrel to fill the void space, but the whisky itself is sitting in an oxidized container, for years. The idea that all it takes is to pour a little whisky out of the bottle and let it oxidize for a week or two is basically saying "Every single whisky in a bottle was bottled one/two weeks too early. If the distiller had let it oxidize for just one/two more weeks it would have been amazing". That claim is bonkers to me.
Reason 4: There is no evidence to support the claim of neck pours
I would argue this is the most divisive argument to make because a lot of people don't understand the burden of proof. Every time I have brought up that I don't believe in neck pours on these subreddits someone always says PROVE IT! The burden of proof lays on the initial, or positive claim. In this case the claim that neck pours are a thing is the initial/positive claim, therefor the burden of proof lies on those claiming it is real. Just as it is impossible to prove unicorns DON'T exist, it is very hard to prove the neck pour DOESN'T exist, but that doesn't mean people haven't tried. Dr. Don Livermore at Hiram Walker claims they did a test on bottle oxidation by half filling several bottles, leaving them for FIVE YEARS, and then using their top of the line equipment to test the whiskies and they found NO CHEMICAL DIFFERENCE. Until you can scientifically point to how a whisky changes of a week or two from the first dram to the fourth you can't scientifically claim it exists. Do I have evidence of the Hiram Walker study? No, I do not. This is one of the most frustrating aspects of digging into myths like this in the whisky community is that almost nothing is scientifically published. I can't look up the results for these experiments because they were never released, there is no financial incentive for any distillery to conduct these experiments and release them to the public in a peer reviewed journal when the myth of the neck pour doesn't stop people from buying their products. In conclusion for reason 4, until a distillery or independent research team conducts a peer reviewed scientific study to investigate and explain exactly how neck pours DO exist, there will be no scientific evidence that they do and all other claims will be entirely anecdotal.
Reason 5: But I Saw a Youtube Video Where They PROVED It
There are several channels that have attempted to do a blind tasting to see if neck pours are real, the closest to being scientifically decent was probably the bourbon junkies, although I can no longer find the episode (If someone has it feel free to link it in the comments). A side by side comparison however is not a good scientific study. To get valid results you would need to do something more like an ABA blind test and repeat it 10 times. Basically have 2 pours of a neck pour and one of an opened bottle or vice versa, all you need to do is pick the odd one out. If you can do that 10 times in a row you can probably confidently claim you can detect a difference between the neck pour and an open bottle. In order for this to work you'd have to do it with a single cask release ensuring you have the two bottles from the same cask, otherwise as pointed out by this video: Whiskey Tribe "neck pour" video you get into the territory of "is this really a neck pour or just flavour drift bottle to bottle?". Without doing a chemical analysis of the whisky this is probably the best experiment you could do at home, 10 renditions of the same whisky in a blind ABA test, if someone here is wants to try that and upload it somewhere I would be VERY keen to watch.
In conclusion: Until someone can prove with anything close to resembling a scientific study that neck pours do in fact exist, all claims that neck pours do exists are entirely anecdotal evidence more likely caused by flavour drift bottle to bottle and by changes in our very human palates.

2022.01.24 11:57 red_badge_of_derp How do you handle nights?
I’m a FTM, and my husband and I have been talking about how we’re planning to handle nights with the baby when she gets here. I’ve realized that I have no idea what’s feasible or realistic!
I’d ideally like to EBF, at least for a few months. If that works out, will I just be doing 100% of the nights, since I need to be up to feed her anyway? Or would it be something where I handle a percentage of night feedings solely on my own, and my husband helps with the rest to change diapers, bring the baby to me to eat, and then soothe her back to sleep on his own so I can get a little more rest in? Would that even help? Or should I just resign myself to never sleeping again?
Any and all advice appreciated!

2022.01.24 11:57 Baron_Sandshrew Alcahest and harm
"Alcahest (iii/1): A fluid that stops the effects of any other alchemical."
When I first read the description of alcahest I did not imagine it as being something to imbibe. This is honestly due to it being in the oil section with other substances that affect the world outside of the human body. The leech in my session had been thinking about it more like a universal anti-toxin that can undo the effects of drugs or poisons even after they've been consumed.
The specific scenario it came up in was this. Our Spider suffered a level 1 harm for a mixed success on a consort roll. She was imbibing dream smoke and whiskey with some layabout sailors and couldn't help indulging herself, getting the condition "turnt" in a level one slot. Our leech offered a dose of alcahest to clear her head and get her fit for fighting again. I ultimately ruled that at best it could change the condition but not heal the harm and we agreed to ask the fine scoundrels of reddit for clarification.
Also, as an aside, is alcohol considered an alchemical substance? If alcahest can purge magic poison from your body why not cap wine?
Tldr: Is alcahest meant to be drank too counteract ingested substances? Would you allow alcahest to reduce or remove harm caused by drugs or poison? Thanks for the insights!
