Turned on incognito mode on Reddit to look at some NSFW content. The first post on the default news page is a post about a sweet kid who unfortunately has cancer, scaring a nurse with a toy dinosaur. Now my NSFW mood has been killed because of how adorable the kid is and how fucked up it is that children have cancer.

2022.01.24 13:19 EliSkywalker77 Feeling frustrated
I have been lifting weights, doing cardio and on a calorie deficit for a year. First 9 months went great I lost a hair over 100 pounds and a whole bunch of clothes sizes! But the last 3 months I haven't lost a single pound. It's making me feel really down about myself having both loose skin and fat you can't seem to get rid of. I cant figure out why this weight isn't dropping.

2022.01.24 13:19 peaceful-lemon Need to connect a graphql frontend with offline mode to an appsync backend - looking for recommendations/ solutions
Hello, I'm working on a frontend web-app that requires offline support (saving information locally somehow, and uploading it when internet becomes available). The backend will be created with aws appsync - this is out of my control. Originally the (react) web-app was meant to use apollo-client, but I gather that v3 of apollo client doesn't work with appsync, at least not with offline support, and it seems this issue is not going to be fixed any time soon - if at all. I know there are some workarounds, but Iv'e been told to find a "proper" solution - no workarounds allowed.
So, we are considering switching to a different graphql client and I'm looking for recommendations. I gather appsync themselves have a frontend client available via amplify. I have also heard that urql have an offline cache and some tools that allow offline support, but I don't know if it works specifically with appsync.
Please note that the choosing of the tech stack is out of my hands, I have no influence on the backend, I can't just tell them to not use appsync. Please also note that I need to utilize all graphql functionality and that the offline support is a requirement of the app itself.
Any help will be greatly appreciated, thank you very much

2022.01.24 13:18 microphohn The DIY Alternator replacement from Hell that almost beat me
I generally do my own maintenance and repair on my vehicles. I have a reasonable assortment of tools that allow such and a reasonably roomy garage to support this.
I had a week off so I knocked out a couple DiY projects. I replaced the o-rings on my '05 Odyssey's power steering pump (known failure mode), and with that simple victory under belt, I finally got around to changing the oil on my '07 IS250. Having recently switched to a suction based oil extractor, this was even easier than before.
But when I went to start my car after the oil change, it was dead. Wut? This is a great X2 battery and barely 18 months old! It took some doing to get it jumped, but I got it started and took my customary short test drive-- during which the dash proceeded to light up like a Christmas tree, the HVAC died, and I lost power steering. I managed to get home, but I was pretty sure by now my alternator was toast.
The DMM confirmed it. I limped home running only on a battery at 8.5V. Ah, crap. So off to get an alternator and swap it out. NO problem, right?
This is where I should mention that the underhood space on an IS250 awd is about nil. It is a longitudinal v6 in a tiny engine compartment with an AWD axle and such up front as well as all the "double wishbone" suspension the marketing department ensured the car had. After removing enough plastic to kill dozens of innocent sea creatures, I finally got to see the crazy nest of wiring harness and clips and brackets. Buried way down low on the engine's front drive accessories was the alternator. It was pretty tight in there, but I could see the two main mount bolts so meh, not so bad. Right? RIGHT?
Got the belt off, the removed a pulley that was covering the exit of the alternator. Then I got the two large M12 bolts out of the front. Alternator barely wiggles at all. Hmm. Double checking the myriad wiring clips an ties and connectors, everything was disconnected.
That's when a YT video revealed a tiny nut on a rear mount bracket holding this thing to the block. Under the exhaust manifold. COMPLETELY inaccessible. I can't see it in my line of sight. I can't feel it because my arm doesn't reach far enough. I can't make any more space to get my arm in because the main fuse box is there with a huge harness coming in and out and even with the mount bolts loosened the harness won't move. In exactly one orientation, I can sort of touch the stud that this nut is on with my thumb only, and just the tip and only for a second or two. (just seeing if you read this far).
I can't get a socket on it by feel because there are other fasteners nearby that are also 12mm hex. I found my trusty mirror and found out what was happening. There was a wire harness lead directly blocking access to the bracket nut in question. Somehow I was going to have to snake a socket and extension under or over that lead and push it up or down respectively to get the socket on.
A half a day of struggle and I can't get it. The few times I did get the socket an extension on (without a ratchet) it fell off when I tried to put the ratchet on because I can't get enough reach to have any real control. Finally I got the ratchet on.
And then realized I cant' move the ratchet handle. There's no swing. Even with a stubby.
Eventually I settled on a combination of extension length and socket depth that would fit but I needed a longer ratchet handle, and finer teeth. Off to the the tool store.
Eventually by fishing in a long flex head rather on JUST the right length extension setup using a mirror I was able to get the socket onto the nut (around the wire harness) and get enough turns on it to remove the nut. This took a day and a half of failure and replanning. For a single nut.
And I wasn't' out of the woods yet, because it turns out that you have to do some serious fiddling to get the bracket off that stud and then fish the alternator (with bracket attached) out of the engine bay.
Two days later, and I had removed the old alternator. Which is to say, the job was HALF complete.
Oddly, getting the new alternator in took only half a day or so. I initially tried to reinstall that Nut From Hell on the stud, but with no ability to actually reach the stud in question, it inevitably fell out of the socket I was trying to use to get it started by hand. And in the mess that is an IS250 front end, it disappeared into a nether region where no magnet could discover it.
Eventually my engineering sense kicked in and realized that this thin stamped bracket with a small stud was contributing almost nothing to the mounted stiffness of the alternator compared to the large M12s going right through large cast ears. I left it off and button it up.
Feeling pretty good about myself, I figured I'd just need to jump start my car (remember, battery got excessively drained to 8.5V) and let the alternator charge it up. I didn't realize at the time that this amount of discharge is often a death sentence to a car battery. Nor that the battery's output was basically nothing and I was trying to jump start a 200-300+ amp starter load from a vehicle with an alternator output of barely 100a.
Unsurprisingly, I couldn't get my car jumped. No amount of boosting and starting would get it to start, as this is a push button start that will not crank and crank, it just clicks and whimpers. What's worse, the battery is now down to 4.5V from all the repeated starting attempts. At this point I'm thinking I've destroyed an expensive X2 battery and just hoping the alternator install wasn't botched. I'm having a small panic set in about having to have the car towed to a shop, have them replace the battery and redo my botched alternator install. Which means on top of spending hundreds of dollars on more tools, I will have to spend another grand or so to get my car back running (this might be a time to mention the car is worth maybe $4k total).
I bought a small battery charger that was faster than a 1a trickle charge and hoped against hope that his battery could be resurrected from the dead...
Hooked it up. Charger reads 4.5v. Gets a couple tenths higher voltage, then gives an error amounting to "your battery is ruined". Disconnect and reconnect. A couple more tenths of a volt, another "your battery is ruined" error message. Wash, rinse, repeat a dozen times. Got it up to about 10v and decided to leave it for the night, expecting it would go into the common error state and fail to charge.
Next morning, the charger is actually NOT in the error state but charging and showing 13V!!
Reconnected the battery terminals, said a short prayer and hit the start button.
Engine roars to life. Alternator is charging at well over 13v. Battery is holding 12.6V and not appearing to drain. Test drive verifies everything is ok: the missing nut is causing no vibration issues, the new belt is tracking perfectly, the new alternator is charging, and the battery is essentially Lazarus now, having come back to life after being legitimately dead, as in dead dead, not just drained. Confident the car will actually re-start, I head to the battery shop to see about my warranty on this surely-shot battery.
Battery is fine. It passes load test with flying colors. UNBELIEVEABLE. THIS WAS 4.5V!! No battery survives that depth of discharge. Except one that I know of.
So what did I learn from this?
-- Survey the job in question very soberly before heading down DIY and know when your points of no return are. I almost had a disaster on my hands. Oh, and "I'm too old to deal with this crap anymore" is a legit reason.
-- Harbor Freight's Icon line of hand tools truly are tool-truck grade The ratchets and sockets are the equal of any Snap on or Matco I've used. EXCELLENT JOB, HF!
-- X2 batteries from Batteries Plus are incredible. Forget your Optima, these are at least as good as Odyssey and I'll be buying them as long as I can afford them. Four year warranty with NO pro-rate. And they can apparently withstand abuse that will destroy lesser batteries.
Car is back in service with apparently no lasting ill effects to the car-- just to my budget and my hands and arms (scabbed all over). Why do things always break in the winter?
Compared to this IS250, everything Honda is cakewalk to work on. Even a front drive v6 van. If you are DiY like I am, skip the Lexus. At least the small ones.
