2022.01.17 18:38 horseradish500 Just getting started, looking for advice about finding records in prewar eastern Europe
I've challenged myself to trace back my family as far as I can. Some parts are easy as there are plenty of records for New York going all the way back to the 1800s, so I've been able to find most of the tree of one of my G-gmas: I have all of her ancestors up to one set of 4X-great-grandparents. But that's only one tiny branch. I am really just getting started, and very inexperienced, but this is my special interest and I want to see it through. My family is almost 100% immigrants who came here in the 20th century. I have no idea where to start looking for people like my great-grandma Sima, whose whole family was murdered in a Polish ghetto in WWII. I don't speak Polish yet (I do know some Russian) and only have a little Italian which is where the other half of my family is from. I consider Ancestry a last resort. Does anyone have experience with this sort of thing? Where do I start? What are the odds that there's even anything left from a place like Podkamien in 1930? I'm trying not to get my hopes up, of course, but I've already made exciting discoveries and I would love to keep learning.

Hi Reddit!

2022.01.17 18:38 KnowLoitering New to the area, and I am wondering...
Background: I just moved to the area recently, December of last year. Overall, I am loving the Nashville/East Nashville area! Also, this sub has been super helpful and pretty hilarious.
About me: As a hobby, I like to metal detect. Usually, this involves researching places on old maps/photos or generally just looking around for signs of older homes/human activity (private property). I find the owners; and with their permission, I'll usually spend a day walking and detecting. If they are interested, at the end of the day, I will show them what I found or take photos. Also, a few times it has been really cool because I have gotten to return lost jewelry to people or give them pieces of history that tie to their family/home. That being said, with COVID numbers going crazy and all the snow, I haven't felt door knocking to be the most polite/safe thing to do, and my ability to get permission sites has been at a firm 0 count since moving here.
My question: Really, I was wondering if there are any people in this sub who also metal detect OR people who wouldn't mind letting me go "dirt fishing" in their fields/yards. (Also, I have a spare detector in case anyone does not have the equipment, but would like to buddy hunt at a place they know.) I've gone with lots of friends before who didn't have any previous experience, and 9 times out of 10, they usually have a great time.
Let me know what you all think and feel free to ask any questions/DM me, thanks!
I noticed there are clubs/groups in Middle Tennessee for the hobby as well as FB groups, and I am already looking into them. :)

2022.01.17 18:38 Outrageous_Pea4124 Should I keep following him?
So I been in a long distance relationship for almost a year me (25F) he (29M). At first everything was fine, we both agreed to start a relationship even if distance could be a challenge. The most significant thing for me when we started the relationship was that I decided to be very direct and clear, to talk about agreements, set boundaries and let him now how important is communication for me and more in this challengingly situation. I can say everything was “going well” but honestly, i feel that aprox 3 months ago, I started to be the only one pushing the relationship, looking for create spaces to talk and see each other, always respecting each other’s time and making our calendars match. I thought he was really busy, but it seems like he have time for other compromises like friends, games, sports and stuff . I’m really tired of be the only one pushing the relationship and trying to talk about this without success. I know that everyone is different and even knowing that probably he’s not on his best season I try to be empathic and kind. I’m sick of justify this shit everyday giving him the chance to tell me if he’s over the relationship, or whatever, but he says no, change his attitude for a couple days and then going back to the same. I’m a really busy in my day by day, cause I manage a food business double shift, then study on weekends, but I try to always make a space to make him feel loved, appreciated and understood, taking care of my actions, words and details, but 100% sure I’m not receiving the same. Is hard for me to take a decision because I still love him, but my patience is fading faster and faster 😣
Any advices? Suggestions? Comments?
