2022.01.27 23:25 indymutt Missing Persons Part 1: Lock Your Doors
It was the 17th night of October 2007, a particularly chilly night, when 17 year old Samantha Greywood found herself alone in her Oregon home. It was a Wednesday night, her parents were out of town, driving to Portland for “business reasons”. To Samantha, it was a night that would be spent studying for next morning’s algebra exam. It was around 7 pm, the night was going quiet and the sun had just crested the mountains, leaving the world outside of Samantha’s window dark and cold. She listened as the wind whistled through the bare branches of the forest just past her backyard and stared down at the red, yellow, and brown leaves that caked her once green yard, creating a vast ocean of dense autumn debris. Recenturing her attention, she sat down back in her chair and looked at the piece of paper in front of her on the desk, illuminated a warm shade of yellow by the small desk light on the corner. Grey pencil lines scattered across the paper, like tattoos of mathematical expressions. She sighed, exhaling and breathing in an air of procrastination. For whatever reason, she could not bring herself to focus. Her attention was entranced by the world outside of her desk, the chilly autumn air outside of her house and the sounds that broke through it, leaves crunching, branches snapping and the sound of a barn owl all were more interesting than her current task. She looked around at her dim room. Her messy bed lay behind her, with a wrinkled light blue comforter sitting balled up at the foot of the bed and her pillows against the wall adjacent. Next to the bed was a mahogany nightstand, on top of which sat a table lamp and a half full blue bottle of Gatorade. The lamp contributed to the room a vague orange light, which illuminated the posters on her walls and kept the room from complete darkness. Samantha’s zoned out state was interrupted when the sound of beeping downstairs shot through the quiet house, her mind jumped back to the pizza her mother left for her and she realized that the oven was beeping. Springing from her chair she trudged to the door and opened it, spilling the light into the black hallway. Reaching around the corner of the door she flipped the light switch and began treading down the hallway towards the stairs. The house was old, and as her foot landed on the first step it groaned as if it were alive. She moved down the steps passing old family photos and ugly paintings, each individual stair making a noise as she went along, like the notes on a piano. She rounded the corner of the landing and stepped into her living room, passing the brown leather couch and coffee table. Her foot landed on the ceramic tile of the kitchen and she stepped over to a drawer, pulling and removing a puckered oven mit. The smell of pizza flooded the kitchen. Opening the oven, a blast of heat hit her. She leaned in and pulled out the pan, setting it on top of the stove and moving to another drawer to remove a pizza cutter. She stopped suddenly, the house had grown dead silent, the only thing to be heard was the sound of the pizza cutter rolling through the crust, cutting the cheap pizza into a piece which she removed and placed on a paper plate. Not only was the house dead silent, it was also cold. “The heat is most likely off” she thought to herself and decided that she would return upstairs and grab a blanket. adjacent to the stove was a cupboard, which she opened and removed a cup from. Turning around, she took it to the sink and filled it with tap water, sipping as she looked out the window. It was completely dark outside now, the only things visible were just slightly within the reach of the light exiting the window. She could faintly make out the silhouette of the oak tree in her backyard. As she looked she noticed
something outside. What appeared to be a face, was peering at her through the window. It was faintly visible by the light of the kitchen. She squinted and tried to make out the features, perhaps it was just a smudge on the glass, she looked to her left at the sliding glass door 7 feet from the kitchen window and cautiously approached and looked outside. There, she saw it again, the face was just barely illuminated, leaving a pair of dark eyes on a ghostly face which she stared at, frozen. Without removing her gaze, she reached her hand over to the light switch and flipped on the light inside the living room. The extra light spilled into the outside, and there, clear as day, stood a man in her backyard. His face was long, pulled into an eerie grin. He had long, unkempt hair and eyes that appeared to be black in the night. He was unnaturally tall and skinny, his pale skin pulled around his bones, he was naked. His disturbing figure resembled something that attempted to look like a human, but was missing a universal fundamental aspect that anything remotely human could follow. What it was was imperceivable, something deep inside of her knew that the thing standing before her was humanly wrong. A detestation of the natural laws of innocence. What disturbed her so much was how wrong it felt. Everything inside of her screamed to run upstairs, lock the door and hope that it was a bad dream. Yet she found herself frozen. Again, without diverting her gaze, she reached for the home phone on the kitchen counter next to her, she had no idea what to do. Her frantic thoughts darted around her head, she didn’t even know who to call, almost as if panicking, she dialed her best friend. In her trepidation, the thought of the police hadn’t even crossed her mind. Her muscles screamed as the phone rang. “Hello-” the voice was cut off by Samantha’s frantic words “Sarah, I’m freaking out, there's a man standing in my backyard and I don’t know what to do” She blurted out, her heavy breathing being pumped into the phone “Ok, calm down, are the doors and windows locked?” Sarah replied “Yes, I think so.” she cried out, “Ok, calm down a bit, he’s outside, you’re inside. My uncle is a deputy and he told me how rare crime is in this town, it’s nearing Halloween it’s probably just a prank.” Sarah said, trying to calm down her friend. “Just calm down a bit, you’re safe.” she followed. “Sarah, something is off about him. Something seriously wrong. How do you expect me to calm down?!, how would you feel in this situation!” She frantically cried out. “Listen, our town has the lowest crime rate in the state, of the 266,000 burglaries that happened last year only 6% of them were in Oregon.” Samantha fell silent. She realized something that she missed in her panicked mind. The phone dropped out of her hand, crashing onto the floor. “Samantha? Samantha?” Sarah shouted, receiving no answer. As Samantha looked at the glass she realized that she missed one crucial detail. Something that in her panic she glossed over. The man wasn’t outside. It was a reflection.
Thanks for reading, if you enjoyed this story and would like more, I intend on making this into an anthology style series with different characters and stories. Hopefully this can be the first part of something interesting.

2022.01.27 23:25 Rumbuck_274 Where did the good Herbicides go?
Was sent here by a member of gardening
So I'm trying to kill heaps of weeds that have moved into my acreage.
I recall as a kid, you'd buy herbicide, spray it on, and you could basically watch trees and plants and weeds die the moment it hit them.
Do it in the morning and it's dead by the afternoon.
I've tried nearly every herbicide they have at Bunnings, and most stuff just lives through it.
At the point where I'm thinking drastic measures of non-herbicidal chemicals may be in order.

2022.01.27 23:25 unapprehended IDK WHAT TO DO.
I do not remember when it first started but sometimes when I poop I get blood when I wipe. The thing is though, its between the butthole and the tailbone not the butthole. I would get a small bleed and then go the longest time without getting blood when I poop and then BAM I would get a large bleed when I go to poop. This time was the first time that it bled enough to drip and I'm scared. I looked today and there seems to be a small hole??? It does not hurt strangely. Idk what to do I feel overwhelmed. When I think about talking to a doctor about it I feel like I'm going to pass out I'm mortified!

2022.01.27 23:25 lys91 HR Asking for Doctor Note
Am I required to provide a doctors note for an appointment that I take during my lunch? It does not run over my lunch break as I do you the appointment over the phone while at the office in a private room. I live in Florida by the way. If this is not required, what is some thing I can say to politely decline this request?

2022.01.27 23:25 nclarke1234 Eli5: how do some cars with turbos max out their torque and horsepower at a low rpm?
My car has a turbo, and it makes max torque and horsepower at 2k rpm and drops off from there. In theory, shouldn’t the higher the rpm’s are mean more torque and horsepower with more air going through the turbo?

2022.01.27 23:25 LonesomeHebrew I’d like to hear the sub’s thoughts on the Sunflower album!
I’ve listened to all of the albums now numerous times, many of them more than I can count. I’ve found that I’ve grown to love a few albums that I used not really like, so I’ve tried listening to Sunflower a few more times and I just don’t get it.
I mean, it’s decent. I think a few of the songs are good, but a lot of people here list it in their Top 5 or even Top 3 favorite albums.
I just wanted to get some replies to understand why so many people hold this album in such high regard. Thanks!
