2022.01.26 19:34 cheesencrackers122 Transitioning from MEP to defense (or something similar) - Has anyone done it?
I've been out of college nearly 9 years come this spring and graduated from a top university (Ivy) with a BS in EE. I've been working in the MEP industry for the past 7 years. Prior to that I spent an internship and first couple years in a large, international transportation equipment manufacturer. I've done well in MEP but can't imagine staying in this field for my entire career. I've had my fill of powelighting/fire alarm design and playing whack-a-mole with a never-ending waterfall of projects. I'd much rather put my effort into something more meaningful and challenging, and particularly something not in construction.
I'm so far removed from electronics hardware design, which I studied in college, so I'm leaning more towards something more broad like project engineering or systems engineering. I'm in the US (Philly area) and there are a number of large, nearby defense and aerospace companies constantly posting job openings. I've recently been tempted to apply to some of these but can't help but feel discouraged because my electrical/power systems design experience is too specific and too different from the desired experience in the postings. However, I'm very eager to learn something new and apply my general engineering skills I've gained over the years.
Has anyone successfully made a career change like this (ideally without a significant cut in salary)? Any tips?

2022.01.26 19:34 nasturtium_c How would you handle this- not a logical consequence for problem student
Hi, I'm looking for advice on how to handle this situation.
There is a student in my building with ADD/ADHD/Opp. Defiance who is pretty notorious. He struggles academically and socially. Today I started a new semester and saw that he was added to one of my classes last minute. I heard he was being kicked out of another class (I won't name the subject but it is a requirement for all the kids to take and is not a core subject). I put two and two together and realized he was put in my class because he was removed from this other class. He was removed because he was not doing any work and was distracting to others... so I'm very confused as to how and why my school is rewarding this child for doing 0 work for a required class, exempting him from a class no one else can opt out of, and letting him take a fun class with his friends instead. I feel like he was dumped on me- and ill suck it up and do my best with him if that's what I need to do but I do feel like I need to express my concern with my principle. I feel that he's being rewarded instead of getting a logical consequence. This class that he is now in is meant to be a more advanced (special) elective. The other kids were even asking him how THEY can get out of said class! What would you do in this situation? I like my principle and feel that they are reasonable but I feel a bit taken advantage of. I'm untenured, but in good standing with my admin. I feel like I'm always having to just grin and bear stuff like this but I'm pretty annoyed.

2022.01.26 19:34 Shintri Nvidia Shield Pro remote issue
Just to start out to say that I HAVE NOT installed the recent update or done any other updates. Remote has been working fine (for >year) up until this morning. On the home screen I can move up and down and side to side. I then go to click an app under 'favourites apps' and in general it just moves the cursor back to the first app in the 'Favourite Apps' row, e.g. I select VLC as the third favourite app, it doesn't load vlc and it just moves the selection back to be sitting on the first app. Everything is working fine if I use my wireless keyboard so I have to consider that the problem is the remote.
I tried the following troubleshooting steps that I read about - new batteries, taking out shield power plug for more than ten seconds and restarting. I cleared bluetooth cache and data. I held the back and home key down until the remote lights stopped flashing to re-pair the remote. I turned of network debugging.
A final comment - when I took the batteries out the remote there was a white creamy texture in it. I'm guessing the battery leaked (even though less than a month old) but like with most electronics I wiped it out and hoped it would be ok. No rust on connections noted. I couldn't even see a problem with the batteries themselves. I'm hoping that whilst this may seem an easy and obvious reason for the problem, that the remote is salvable and maybe it was a software problem. I'm wondering if the remote is sending extra signals back to the shield counteracting the command I want it to do.
Otherwise it looks like I'll be buying a new remote. Any suggestions? I'm located in Australia.

2022.01.26 19:34 FeaturedSpace39 15 M, read desc pls
Should/can i cut. is it wise, and if not what should i do to attain my goals (15M)
here is some info about me currently:
id say i’m about 25-35% body fat. each picture really varies but it’s around there. anyways looking to get down to maybe around 15-20 percent body fat. an important thing to note is I already have muscles and a foundation to build (or i guess cut) on. i weight about 165 pounds at 5’8/9. here is my plane:
i’m gonna be in a 300 calorie deficit while still hitting protein goals. i’m not sure how long a 300 calorie deficit will take to go from around 25/30% to maybe 17, so if someone could answer that would be cool. i’ll still continue to hit the gym 5-6x a day and run pretty much every day. anyways what is everyone’s thoughts on this? also if someone could link a calorie calculator that allows <18, that’d be clutch. thanks.

2022.01.26 19:34 BusiestVase Making a move for Beal?
I’m sure I’m not the only one who watches Kenny Beecham’s day after NBA recaps, but he was in the Wizards sub the other day and there was a thread in there proposing a package for Beal including MPJ, Zeke, and Bones. I would take Beal because I think we need a secondary scorer, but not for that package. What are y’alls thoughts about making a big splash like that? What are some other smaller moves like acquiring a Kenrich Williams that we could do? Should we even try to make any more moves before the deadline? Treat this as a general discussion for moves at the trade deadline.

2022.01.26 19:34 Dibbles540 When do I go ahead with surgery? (19 M)
TLDR at the bottom
Before discussing my current situation, I want to explain the course of my symptoms to provide some extra context to my situation. I have had lower back pain since mid-2019 (not sure if that is related to my current condition or not) that I think was due to a mountain biking crash I got in but it had been off and on. The pain was never severe but I noticed it did affect my performance in sports. The main problem was stiffness after sitting in class all day (as high schoolers do.) In December of 2020, I noticed the pain caused my back to be so stiff that I some days wasn't able to pick things up off the floor, but again the pain wasn't severe so it didn't affect my day-to-day life. I pretty much just ignored it. Cut to late August of 2021, the back pain was getting worse and it started to affect my daily life.
By the end of September, the pain had begun down my leg. It started to affect the way I walked to class on my campus, as well as my focus. After complaining to my parents for what felt like years, they decided I should come back home (my campus is 6 hours from home) one weekend and see a doctor. There wasn't anyone in-network for our insurance in my college town so I decided to make the trip the week before Haloween.
In town, I got an x-ray which showed nothing, but at least the doctors had an idea of what was wrong. They put me on 75mg of diclofenac and a 6-day taper Medrol dose pack. Not liking the sound of the side effects of the steroids, I stuck with only the Diclofenac and headed back to campus. The diclofenac helped for a while, but eventually, it stopped working and the pain in my leg was so severe that by Thanksgiving break I could no longer sit at all. My mother had just started a new job and the copay was much better, so she promised me that as soon as her insurance switched, she would get me into a specialist for an MRI.
The 6-hour drive home was the worst pain I'd ever felt in my life. I arrived home on the brink of tears and didn't even bother unpacking because I physically couldn't but the worst had yet to come. The day before I headed back up to campus, we went to a restaurant and after waiting an hour for our food, I limped back to my car and drove home without eating because simply couldn't sit any longer. I think this was a wake-up call to my parents. All they had known was what I told them over the phone from campus. This was the first time they'd actually seen how debilitating the symptoms were.
The next day, after an excruciating 6-hour drive back to campus ( I was only able to drive 4 of the 6 because the pain got so bad I couldn't focus on driving anymore, luckily I had my friend with me to finish out the drive) I received a phone call from my Mom letting me that she was scared for my health and that she was going to get me into a doctors office for an MRI. At this point, I had already emailed all of my professors about my condition and they were all gracious enough to allow me to continue the rest of the semester remotely as laying down was the only position that provided any relief whatsoever.
To sum up the rest of the story quickly, I left before finals to do them from home and that week I got the MRI results back. I have 3 herniated discs from L4-S1. There were some other things wrong with the facet joints as well but I am not a doctor so I can't explain it well enough. I got scheduled for steroid injections which I received almost a month ago now as well as some physical therapy largely reliant on extension based movements and nerve flosses. The steroids definitely helped me be able to move around more normally, but sitting is still difficult and now I believe the steroids are becoming less effective as the pain is starting to come back. I am recognized as disabled by my university as of now so remote learning is a possibility.
Yesterday I had a follow up appointment with my doctor and he basically came to conclusion to give it 3-4 more weeks to see where my condition goes and if we see no improvement or any worsening of symptoms he wants to go ahead with surgery. I am a 19 year old and the prospect of back surgery is one that makes me nervous. I understand that there there is a possibility for success and that I will be able to function as a normal young adult should, but what scares me is what can go wrong. After reading parts of The Back Mechanic I don't know that surgery is the right call but at the same time I want to get my life back.
So my question is as follows, at what point should I consider surgery, and if surgery isn't in the cards, what else should I do?
TLDR; I've had a pretty shitty 5 months and doctor is looking at surgery. I'm young, should I listen to the doctor or do something else?
