2021.12.05 22:44 Inverted_Semiotics Major issues with the finale and possible improvements
So, here are my thoughts on what Hope’s major problems were and how the episode could have been improved. TLDR at the bottom because dear god this is going to be long
Before getting into the criticism, I want to say the animation was amazing. The fight between Hate, Chara, and Asriel was the best choreographed in the entire series. The quality of the drawings and animation has continued to noticeably improve, even from just the last episode. Especially after seeing Cami’s art style improve over the series, it’s one of the best parts of the finale.
Now, looking through this sub, it seems the story is the part that most people take issue with. In my opinion, the biggest problem with it is Hope doesn’t appear to have any lasting effects on the characters or the story. Other than Ronan and Rave becoming friends, you can easily cut Hope out and have the story end at Gaster killing Bette in Animosity without any major changes to the plot afterwards. This makes the entire episode feel like an extended final fight scene to resolve the loose ends without any stakes.
Emotion There are two major ways Glitchtale has gotten us emotionally invested in both the larger story and individual fights. First, Cami’s been a trigger-happy sadist killing off all our favorite characters. This has made watching each episode a harrowing experience since we know nobody is safe. Asriel getting stabbed was such an important scene for so many people because Cami killing him off was a real possibility. Having one last major death would have been a fitting way to end a series this bloodthirsty, but it doesn’t seem like there are many characters that could be reasonably killed off. I’m assuming each surviving character is going to play an important role in season 4 so changing the story to kill a character is off the table. Also, a happy ending is a nice contrast to the rest of the series.
The second method of emotional abuse is how the characters are developed in fights. Glitchtale has really excelled at having fight scenes that develop the characters and significantly affect the plot afterward. The three best fights, in my opinion, are Asgore and Toriel v Bette in Hate, Frisk v Bette in Love part 2, and the Original Bad Time Trio v Bette in Animosity. In Love, we see Frisk give up on pacifism and corrupt themself to try and kill Bette. In Hate, we learn the different ways Asgore and Toriel dealt with their grief and see how that changes the outcome of the battle. In Animosity, we get to see the culmination of everything that’s happened to Gaster: after slowly seeing everything around him crumble and struggling to stop it, he finally snaps and it’s terrifying. What all of these arcs have in common is the focus on how the characters develop and how the fights support that.
The finale is somewhat lackluster when it comes to emotion. There’s definitely some character development, especially in the Ronan and Rave fight, but a lot less than there could be. The focus in these fights is primarily on fighting the monster attacking them instead of on the internal struggles of the characters. In my opinion, the best way to improve the episode would have been to change this: have both fights be more about the internal struggle Hate creates in people and how they overcome it. I have some ideas on how these fights could be improved:
Hate Ronan V Rave & Co. The premise for this fight is amazing; Hate being able to take people over and turn them into near-unstoppable agents of destruction while trapping their mind in its own personal hell is great. As someone else on the subreddit mentioned, it would have been interesting to see it turn into a citywide problem as multiple people become infected, but I doubt it would have been possible to set that up and resolve satisfyingly in only one episode, so I think only focusing on Ronan was a good move.
The easiest place to improve this fight would be by expanding whatever was going on in Ronan’s mind. Having him relive his last moments with his wife to keep him trapped is probably my favorite part of this fight. The problem is how it’s resolved; after he hurts Rave, Ronan tries to leave and starts fighting against Hate. This allows Rave to see what’s going on and save Ronan by headbutting him. Then there’s a scary shot of a Hate monster before Undyne destroys it. This conclusion doesn’t seem like a logical solution to the conflict in the scene. Ronan decides to try to resist Hate without dealing with the regret that caused him to stay in the first place. Giving Rave a moment where he resolves to save Ronan is great, but headbutting Ronan to force the Hate out comes out of nowhere and is somewhat anticlimactic. These narrative choices hinder the scene since they make it feel like just a drawn-out fight scene with an abrupt end.
In my opinion, having the conclusion mirror the Papyrus v Sans fight, with Ronan resolving his internal conflict to defeat the Hate, would be a better conclusion to the fight. First, focusing on his emotional conflict would allow for more character development, helping the fight feel important outside of just beating another enemy. Second, we’ve already seen Sans saved this way, so the conclusion would make more sense in the lore and seem less abrupt. The biggest challenge with this approach would be keeping Rave’s development and figuring out how he helps Ronan. He could call out to Ronan like Papyrus did to Sans but, since they haven’t had much interaction to set up a personal moment like this (at least as far as I can remember), it would be hard to pull off. Another option would be when Rave is hit with the Hate bullets, he’s also infected and pulled into a nightmare state where he’s able to talk to Ronan. From there, he could empathize using his experience with his brother dying and help Ronan get past his grief that way. Regardless of the specifics, I think focusing on Ronan’s regrets related to not staying with his wife and how he moves past them would create a much more compelling scene.
One thing that could have been interesting to see is Undyne playing a bigger role. Specifically, having a moment where she sees Ronan about to kill Rave and remembers/the scene parallels when Alphys was being attacked by Bette and Jessica by the pink blob. This time, she would succeed in saving Rave. I think this would be a nice conclusion to Undyne’s character arc, but since the focus was more on Rave this episode, I can understand Cami’s decision not to focus on her.
Chara and Asriel v Hate One of the biggest issues in this fight is how Hate functions as a villain. The reason why Bette was such a good antagonist is she wasn’t just trying to keep humans and monsters separated; she was a sadistic sociopath who tortured people with no reasonable motive besides intrinsic evil. Bette appearing as Jessica’s daughter to her before stealing the hate vial, tricking Undyne into killing Alphys, and tricking Toriel into nearly killing Asgore, among other things, made the fanbase despise her with a passion. Hate, on the other hand, doesn’t have nearly as much character as Bette. All it has is that it’s dangerous because of its high destructive power. This means the only real stake in the fight is whether Hate will kill someone before it’s defeated, and after Asriel’s Hypergod mode we know that isn’t going to happen.
In my opinion, Hate should have challenged the characters on an emotional level as well as just causing mass destruction. We know that Chara hates humanity and has plenty of problems with the world around them, and the fight should have been just as much about them overcoming their own hate as its physical manifestation. This would help add more substance by making the conflict about not only trying to beat the final enemy but also overcoming some of the internal struggles that we saw lead Chara to try to destroy the world in Season 1.
Once again, making this happen would be a bit more complicated. Giving Hate a voice and having it talk to Chara and Asriel like any other character would undermine the inhuman feel that makes it scary in the first place. I think the best way to get around this would be to have it communicate with them using Fear’s illusion magic by having other characters in the illusion say what it wants to them as well as just showing them things that get the point across. Whatever the specifics, having Hate try to convince Chara that the world is terrible and they should just let it destroy humanity, then have Asriel convince them otherwise, would make the fight a lot more meaningful.
Now, the part where Asriel refused to die. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with this scene inherently. Having a character survive for once then end with a great final fight scene would be a fitting finale. The problem is with the stakes in the episode. A lot of people heading into this episode, myself included, were wondering if someone was going to die. Nobody died in the Ronan fight and, given how bloodthirsty the series has been so far, there was a significant chance that either Chara or Asriel would die. When Asriel got stabbed and his soul shattered, it felt like his death was finally giving this fight the emotional weight it needed; turning into his God of Hyperdeath form killed all the tension in the fight, as it was pretty much over at that point. There was the final battle sequence, then they won. The problem with this partis how it created an emotional moment, only to take it away and launch into Hopes and Dreams and an upbeat final battle that put off most people.
In my opinion, there were a couple ways to make this scene better. The best way is to have something other than the fight itself to be invested in. I suggested earlier focusing on Chara’s internal struggle and how Asriel helps him overcome that, but really having anything else so that the only emotional stake isn’t just whether someone will die would work. I think there were a couple stylistic choices that could have improved it as well: first, only having the soul start to shatter or break in half before reforming. Having it completely shatter only for Asriel not to die makes it feel like a fake out. Keeping most of the soul intact or onscreen would help stop that. Second could be to have Chara call out to Asriel, who hears them and refuses to die. This would change the focus to be less on the plot twist itself and more on Asriel and Chara’s relationship, which would help make it feel less out of the blue.
Conclusion Now, after all that criticism, I have to say the final moments during the fight and afterward are probably my favorite part of this episode. Even though we don’t know the canonical reason for it yet, I love that Hate is defeated not just through Asriel and Chara hitting it with absurd amounts of power, but because Chara won’t let Asriel die. It’s a nice contrast to how Bette was killed in the last episode. Additionally, the shots of Chara and Asriel under the night sky were amazing.
I don’t have too much to say about the scenes at the end. A visual representation of Grace getting dragged into hell would have been nice, but other than that they were good.
Before I conclude this, I want to say I don’t think the episode was bad. The animation and emotional moments were done really well and Rave and Ronan’s scene at the end was great; it’s just that after Animosity, Hope had a high standard to live up to, which it didn’t for much of the audience. Regardless, it was still a good episode on its own, and I’m excited to see where the prequels go.
TL;DR: The problem with Hope is it doesn’t have any major impact on the story. You could easily cut it out and have the story end at Animosity, with the only change being Ronan and Rave not becoming friends. It also falls short because there’s very little emotional investment in either of the fights; the only pressing question is whether someone will die before they win the fight. This is why people disliked Asriel refusing to die; it killed all the tension since we knew then that they were going to win at no cost to the characters. In my opinion, the best way to improve this episode would have been to focus more on the characters emotional struggles; more time could be spent exploring how Ronan overcame his regret over leaving his wife and Hate could have taken advantage of Chara’s hatred of humanity to try and convince them to let the world be destroyed.

Hello all, I’m traveling back home GA -> CA and want your input on which bag to get to use as a personal item. I’ll be home for 6 days and only taking clothes (big items would be one Pair of jeans and a 2 zip up sweaters) and vans in the back pack. I looked online for different reviews/pictures of the two options I want but could not find anything. I like the style of both but the compartments of the duffle more. The only thing I’m worried about is the duffle might look too big. If I were to get the backpack then it would be 100% packed meanwhile the duffle would be ~80%. Any input would be appreciated!

2021.12.05 22:44 BeastMumma Byredo x Ouai Leave-in Conditioner
Context: As of now, I don't use any products in my hair other than shampoo and conditioner (Shea Moisture) that aren't 100% natural since my hair is prone to damage, but I recently found out that there is a leave-in conditioner (Byredo x Ouai Leave-in Conditioner) that has my favorite fragrance in it, and I'm debating on making an exception. When I looked on the ingredient list, the sixth last ingredient was isopropyl alcohol, which I heard should be steered clear from, and the long ingredient list altogether was a bit intimidating. Still, on some sites, I read that it's nothing to worry about if the IPA is near the bottom of the ingredient list since it's likely to have evaporated already. Also, the ingredients are different on the Byredo Website from the Ouai and Sephora websites, as it doesn't show isopropyl alcohol in the ingredient list, and I'm not sure if that's a red flag. Does anyone have experience with this product, or have any advice on whether I should buy it? It's also a bit on the pricer end for a leave-in conditioner ($26 for 140mL). I linked the Ouai and Byredo sites in case anyone can take a look at the ingredient list. Thanks!
