That is their normal bonus amount $10 plus $30 extra specially added if the person referring is a current BlockFi Rewards Visa Card holder, which I am. (Please see images below)

2021.12.08 04:08 pizzabunzzz The Chasm (Pt 1)

To say that the experience was... surreal, is an understatement. Part of me still hasn’t fully processed the events I witnessed, but I’m hoping that making this post will grant me a little more clarity.
It all started at home. My childhood home, to be exact.
I grew up on a farm on the outskirts of a small town in the Midwest. Like most farms out here, our land is composed mostly of open fields that are used to grow a variety of crops. Corn, soybeans, hay; it all grew out here.
This late in the season the harvest has come and gone, and the fields are bare. Even though we don’t live there anymore my father decided against selling the property, for reasons he never really explained. He still hires the neighbors to continue farming his crop though, and I’ve always enjoyed walking around out there once the fields were emptied and the weather had cooled.
Near the back of the property, where our land butted up against our neighbors’, there’s a small grove of trees. It’s set in a natural valley; hidden between gently rolling hills, and a small creek runs right through the middle of it. The quiet babbling of water over pebbles paired with the whispering canopy overhead turned this little grove into a veritable Eden for me. I’d spent countless hours here as a child, playing my favorite made up games.
It was to this favored spot that I walked one day, reminiscing about years gone by. I sat on my favorite rock by the creek, it was shaped in such a way that made it a perfect seat, and I lost myself in my memories.
I’m not exactly sure how long I sat there, lost in my mind, before I noticed it. I’d been staring off into the trees, not really paying attention to anything, when a dark spot in my peripheral vision caught my attention. I focused on the spot and was absolutely shocked to find a large hole in the ground.
I stood up and made my way to it, on the opposite side of the creek. It was mostly obscured by underbrush and trees but after a little bushwhacking I made my way over to its edge and cautiously peeked inside.
The hole was huge, maybe 6 feet in diameter and seemingly bottomless. The edges of it were perfect; no big stones or roots stuck out from the walls. It was all earth, as far down as I could see. It definitely looked man-made; it was too perfect to be naturally occurring. But I couldn’t fathom who would be trespassing onto our land just to punch a hole in the earth.
I scanned the area around it, looking for any clues about who or what might have made it when I noticed something else.
The trees surrounding it were not in a normal pattern. They grew in a ring; a perfect circle around the hole in the ground, with a couple of feet of clearing between the edge and the roots.
It was unnerving, finding something so odd in the place I used to spend so much time. I can’t recall having ever seen this bottomless hole as a child, and I felt a profound sense of relief at that. I was notoriously clumsy back then and would have likely fallen in had I stumbled across it.
Ultimately, I decided there was nothing I could do about it at that moment and walked home. There wasn’t anything in the small circular clearing that told me how the hole had come to exist. It was odd, though. It seemed as if it had been there for years, but my family and I all took turns visiting the farm to check up on things and no one else had reported seeing it. Of course, no one knows that little grove like I do but it was still strange.
That night ended normally and the next day I had some errands to run but I found I had some time in the afternoon, so I put my coat on and hiked back out to the grove to examine the strange hole again.
I... I don’t think anyone could have prepared themselves for what I saw.
There was a woman, pacing near the edge of the pit. I didn’t say anything when I initially saw her; I was so shocked by her presence. She was a stout woman, with pale hair and a hooked nose. She wore a well-worn dark blue coat, a pencil skirt, dark stockings, and a pair of scuffed clogs. I remember her so clearly; she reminded me of the nice ladies on the church council that always made delicious desserts for the high school bake sales.
I didn’t recognize her, which was unusual. Everyone knows everyone in a small town like ours, but if she wasn’t from here then who was she? And what was she doing on our property in the middle of the country?
A moment later I finally found my voice and called out to her. She didn’t answer at first, but after walking closer and calling out some more I finally caught her attention. She didn’t seem all that shocked to have an audience and simply continued her fevered pacing. She looked manic; her face was twisted with an emotion somewhere between horror and ecstasy.
Once I got closer, I could hear her muttering something to herself. It was hard to hear, even in the quiet grove, but it sounded like she was saying “It’s time.” over and over again.
Looking back, I can remember thinking how utterly bizarre the situation was, and how I should have been concerned for the woman’s safety considering how close she was to the edge of the chasm. But it was like something inside me was muted. I didn’t feel any fear or foreboding, only a surreal sense of being removed from the situation. I don’t think I could have interfered even if I had wanted to.
Despite the odd sensation, I was still able to ask her who she was and why she was there. But she never answered my questions.
She simply looked at me, and broke out into the most haunting smile I’ve ever seen in my life. She said “It’s time.”
And then stepped over the edge, and fell into the hole.
I stood at the edge of the tree ring, as still as death, waiting. The world around me had gone silent; no babbling water, no whispering trees, no birdsong or rustling bushes or any sounds of life.
The silence was a void that threatened to swallow me whole had the woman not started screaming.
I can’t tell which was worse. The silence or the screams.
Her wailing was impossibly loud. It was like she was standing next to me, shrieking in my ear. The volume never lessened, like you expect it would. I'm not sure if it was the unique acoustics of the chasm or the trees around us but I heard every second of her cries as she fell.
The tone of her screams was not of fear, but pain. She was in agony, and it terrified me. It still terrifies me. It felt like it went on for an eternity. I was trapped there, unable to move. A silent and unwilling witness to her suffering.
When it did finally end, it did so with a crunch. A sickening amalgamation of bones snapping and flesh ripping. That sound... God in Heaven that fucking sound.
At that same moment the strange muteness that loomed over me disappeared. The sounds of the world came back to me all at once and I stumbled back out of the grove in a stupor before falling to my knees and heaving my lunch up and onto the earth beneath me.
I knelt there for many moments, trying to breathe through the nausea and work through the panic that threatened to overwhelm me. I couldn’t believe what I had just seen. It all felt like some horrible nightmare, and I desperately hoped I would wake up soon.
But I wasn’t dreaming. This nightmare was real. I had just witnessed a suicide, and a horrific one at that. The logical side of my brain was finally kicking in, taking the wheel from the part of me that was in shock. I knew what I needed to do next.
I slowly stood up, trying to balance on my shaking legs. I was facing away from the pit, and my instincts were screaming at me not to look back at it. Everything inside me told me to walk away, back towards home where there would be a cell phone single. Where I could call for help.
But I felt something then. Like a light tapping at the back of my mind. The panicked part of me was subdued a little and without thinking I turned back around to face it.
It looked just the same as it had. I blinked back my residual tears and very slowly crept back towards the hole. Would I be able to see anything this time? Would the woman’s mangled corpse be visible at the bottom? Maybe I could get a sense of how deep this thing went...
But then I caught a glimpse of one of the woman’s shoes, which had apparently slipped off before she stepped over the edge.
Reality slammed back into me and I was once again stumbling away from the pit, only this time I broke out into a flat-out run. I ran all the way back to the house, like the very hounds of Hell were nipping at my heels.
What the hell had I been thinking? What in God’s name would possess me to go back over to that fucking thing? After what I had just witnessed? I was so shocked and disgusted with myself that by the time I made it back to the house I was crying again. I sat on the porch steps and began sobbing, heaving out great, stuttering wails that I’m sure our neighbors half a mile down the road could hear.
I cried until I couldn’t cry anymore, and then I pulled out my phone and called 911.
The rest of the night is mostly a blur. Emergency vehicles arrived within the hour and instantly the farm was ground zero for the largest search and rescue effort I reckon our little town has ever seen. I was herded into the back of an ambulance and checked over. The paramedics determined that I was dehydrated and in shock, but otherwise ok.
Then the police took over, and began asking questions about what had happened. I recounted the events as best I could but I was so exhausted, and it felt like my brain was stuck in a fog. I was able to give them an approximate location of where the pit was, and a rough explanation of what had happened but I remember struggling to remember any details at the time.
I ended up falling asleep for a few hours while the rescue team made their way to the grove. When I woke up, I was still tired but my head felt clearer than it had before.
But at that point it didn’t matter.
Not long after I woke up, the rescue team came back, but they didn’t have a body with them. When I asked the officers why that was, he said they hadn’t been able to find the pit.
To say I was shocked was an understatement. I asked if they had found the grove I had described and they said they had, but there was no sign of any large hole in the ground. I asked if they had found the unusual ring of trees but they hadn’t found that either.
I pleaded with them to go back out and look again but it had been several hours by that point, and it was well into the night. The rescue team wanted to postpone the search until tomorrow.
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. How could they not have found it? It was a massive hole in the ground! How do you miss that!?
But no matter what I said, they wouldn’t be dissuaded. They all packed up, said they would be in contact tomorrow, and left.
I wish I could tell you that I took matters into my own hands and went back out there myself to find the woman. But that would be a lie.
I fought with myself all night, trying to muster up the courage to grab our heavy-duty flashlight and emergency first aid kit and head back out there. I berated myself for my cowardice. I tried everything I could think of that might have pushed me to do something about this horrible situation.
But I couldn’t. As I looked out the window at the moonless night, dread kept me firmly locked within the confines of my house.
I slept very little that night. The woman’s screams and the sound of her hitting the bottom plagued my dreams and I woke several times in a cold sweat.
In between the nightmares, while I lay awake in my bed, the horrible sounds would fade and instead the image of her manic smile would appear to me. I spent many hours thinking about it; ruminating on it. Sure, she had looked near insane but there was something else about her smile that was bugging me. Something familiar about it.
It didn’t occur to me until dawn, when the sky was a lovely shade of pink, that I recognized that smile because I had seen it many times, on many different faces, over the course of my whole life.
It was the smile of the faithful.
