A relatively small thing, but it's interesting to get confirmation regarding this point seeing as it's been debated, and that moment is a pretty significant piece of the puzzle regarding Silco's manipulative tendencies. He knew Vi was there for her rather than the crystal, so he was deliberately lying to her.

2021.12.02 08:56 ruinawish How to run a sub-4:00 mile, by Sir Roger Bannister

Came across this tweet by @jmarpdx:

Sir Roger Bannister only trained 5 days/week for 1 hour total per session (almost always intervals on the track) to become the first man to run 1 Mile under 4:00.
Link to page excerpt from 'How They Train: Middle Distances (1973) by Fred Wilt
A more detailed excerpt from the same book can be found here
Essentially:
Running Magazine Canada provides some further context:
According to the book, he started training in December (five months before the race) and only ran for one hour, five days per week during his lunch hour.
This excerpt from Running Science (2013) touches upon some key breakthroughs:
Early in 1954, Bannister was running each quarter in about 61 seconds, a pace that left him very disappointed. He knew that he would have to figure out some way to get a little faster if he wanted to break through the coveted 4-minute-mile barrier. Frustrated by his inability to improve, Bannister took a complete 3-day respite from running. When he returned to the track after this furlough, he found that he was suddenly able to run the same 10 quarters in 59 seconds each. Thus, the two cornerstones of Bannister's training had been put in place: (1) 400-meter interval training at close to race speed and (2) periodic total rests to produce freshness, improve speed, and permit the body to adapt and recover. These two principles, race-specific training and enhancement of recovery, remain relevant today.
In regards to overall mileage, Athletics Weekly reports:
In terms of cumulative aerobic volume, in running three or four times a week, Sir Roger averaged less than 30 miles per week in the winter phase of periodisation, regressing to just 15 miles per week during the competition phase of the macro-cycle, which seems staggering by today’s standards.
Furthermore:
The longest distance he ran in the month leading up to his 3 minute, 59 second mile was 9 miles. Plus, two weeks before his May 6 race, he took a weekend off to go rock climbing in Scotland to relax. A coach would lambast an athlete for such an act today.
So there you have it. Now go and get that sub-4 mile!

2021.12.02 08:56 AndreasLa [PubQ] Blocked by an agent because of a bad query?

So, back in the day I sent a query for a MS of mine to pretty reputable agent. I'll be honest, it was riddled with grammar errors and all around bad writing. I was too close to it, too in love with the idea of it. I got the standard rejection, albeit a bit personalized, maybe? He said it was something he'd normally totally go for but the first couple of pages didn't grab him. Totally understandable, I figured, lesson learned, he'll toss it aside and won't remember it.
Fast forward to yesterday when I figured I'd query a MS I've been working on. My email bounced back, unable to deliver. Strange, and so I tried again. Same thing. Is something wrong with my email? No, my other queries have sent. Being paranoid of my own failure, I sent a quick email from a spam-account, and IT SENT! Did a big-time agent really block me because of a bad manuscript sent several months and months ago?

2021.12.02 08:56 Affectionate_Ad2583 How do I get an apartment with no credit?

I know the title seems like an obvious “you do the paperwork” stuff but I mean everything. I’m 19 and have to move out of my moms house which is the only place I’ve ever lived, I was never taught anything about credit so I don’t have any, and I only started a new job recently so I don’t have all the paystubs and such. I’m moving with my partner who will make more than me at their new job (I only make minimum wage). But since they’re starting this new job next week they also do not have any of the whole three previous pay stubs stuff. My moms house where me and my partner lived became very hostile so it’s not safe to live there or even stay there until we can find a new place, so we’re couch surfing right now and our things are still at my moms house waiting to be moved into their family’s storage. I’m in the US so obviously minimum wage isn’t even close to livable. I don’t know exactly where else to get advice on how to go about getting an apartment.

2021.12.02 08:56 johnny336 Friend and foe

Previously:
Part 1: Secrets of Town-32
Part 2: The Master's Den
He was touch-and-go for a while. The blast and the fall made him incapable of moving.
- There he is, come, help me lift him. Easy, stalker, you'll be taken care of.
He came to in the Bar of Dead City, Prokhorov watching over him.
- It seems you made it. We felt the shockwave of the blast in the bunker, we immediately set off to find you. The guys hauled you back here, a few bottles of vodka may be appropriate - said Prokhorov in a caring voice, then continued - I was worried for you, but you made it. The town is free now, all thanks to you.
Whenever you ready, we should leave this place behind. I need to find my comrades, debrief, and a reward from the military is due your way, too. We are stationed in the Southern Military Outpost, you stalkers call it Cordon. We should go there, through a quiet route. We don't want any attention, after all a Colonel of the Ukrainian military with an illegal stalker would stand out like a sore thumb.
- All right, then I think we should go through Darkscape, that place is empty. But it's a long walk, we should find some transport - answered Strelok, sitting up on his makeshift bed - I might be able to get something from Freedom, and from the Army Warehouses we can go through Dark Valley, then Darkscape, and arrive in Cordon unnoticed.
- Sounds like a plan, but it should be some proper ride, not some ZAZ, or similar joke, we have to go off-road, and a ride through Darkscape can be rough.
- All right. So we arrive to Army Warehouses, you hide somewhere from hostiles while I get our transpo, then fetch you, and off we are.
The tower in the abandoned village of AW seemed a proper place for Prokhorov, no lurking stalkers, and by climbing on top, he was safe from mutants.
- I wait here, just sound the horn, very few people drive around in the Zone, I will come down to you.
Then Strelok left for the Freedom base.
- Change of plans, Colonel. I managed to get us a ride, but we have to collect it ourselves.
- Just like old times, when you waited years for a fucking Zsiguli, then you stood for hours in queue at the compound, just to bribe the personnel so you can at least pick the color.
- It's not the 80s...and it's not a Lada...it's a BTR.
- What?!
- It seems your guys tried to evacuate Dead City, by air and land. The fate of air evac is known, but the BTR is somewhere in the Swamps, just South of the city. All we need to do is find the "key" to it, and then find IT.
- You do know that these things cannot be picklocked, right? You need a digital code to fire it up, and it could be anywhere.
- Lucky for us, I happened to find a thumbstick on a dead soldier near the crashed helicopter, while collecting metrial for the bomb. So let's hope for the best.
- That's our best bet, but it's still a long shot.
There it was. A few tonnes of armoured steel, and a minigun on top, shining half-sunk in the mud, just half a click from the crash site.
They quicly got inside, ignoring the angry snorks.
- Here comes nothing - said Strelok as he inserted the thumbstick in the "ignition", and the beast of a vehicle came to life.
- Colonel, man the MG, I'll drive.
It was refeshing for both to travel safely: rabid dogs, snorks, zombies were all just a red splatter in the wake of their route.
No one even dared to attack the vehicle as it passed through the Bloodsucker village of Army Warehouses, crossed the Southern hills, the mounted the main road of Dark Valley, finally arriving to Darkscape.
- Get your seatbelt on, Colonel, this may get a bit rough, it's hard to maneuver this thing through narrow spaces of anomaly fields.
- All right...wait, what? Easy there, I don't want to fall off.
- Then grab on to something...
The sheer weight of the monster prevented gravitational anomalies to do their thing, the reinforced steel laughed at acidic anomalies and burners, and the electros just made huge sparks on the outside, their Faraday cage protected them from electric shock. Finally they arrived at the tunnel, leading to Cordon.
Misha was standing guard on top of the main building, the rest of the bandit base at the Car park taking their "well-earned" rest after a long, hard day of ambushes, extortion, and squatting to hardbass.
He was halfway at his cigarette, when he heard a deep rumbling, approaching from the East.
Checked with his binoculars, when he saw something even his experienced criminal mind could not anticipate.
An armoured vehicle, closing in.
- Yuri, what the fuck, the army is here, I told you not to mess with them!
- Fucking drunk, just watch the horizon, and let us rest - came the answer.
- But fuck it, they are coming for us, get the guys!
- All right, but if it's you hallucinating a pack of dogs as the army, then I'll rip you a new one...ayyy mlaaa...run guys, leave your shit, you won't need it in the afterlife!
Panic grew in the Car park, as more and more bandits realized they are done for, and started running around in circles.
Prokhorov placed a few warning shots from the MG at the feet of the escaping bandits, his laugh almost louder than the gun and engine themselves. As a souvenir, he sent an explosive projectile in the ZIL in the middle of the entrance, full with barrels of fuel. The explosion made the remaining bandits scatter around Cordon in a loud cry.
- Now, that was fun! And at least I could do something good for you Free Stalkers. These bandits won't try anything funny for a while. You know, you are not bad, after all, I came to realize, just people who want to get by.
- I'm glad you see it that way, Colonel. Now, we must make the remaining hike on foot, I don't want to startle the Rookie village, they may attack the outpost, and I don't want your people being trigger happy as retaliation.
- Obviously. And as a token of my gratitude, accept this transmitter. It's a friend-or-foe identifier we use among ourselves. If you use it, military MAY not attack you out in the Zone, but at the very least, you are welcome in our base, we have a great technician, who can make repairs and upgrades to your gear. At a discount, of course, after what you have done for me. Farewell, stalker, and take care of yourself - said Prokhorov as he set out to enter the Military outpost in Cordon.
Strelok found an unlikely friend among foes.

2021.12.02 08:56 MyCatBurnedTheBible Immigrant holidays blues + making a little girl sad.

Hello. I'm drowning in a big amount of sadness and confusion and would love some outside perspective to guide me better than I can do it myself right now. I will write the context below, but these are the main questions I have at the moment:

ISSUE: I'm an immigrant within Europe. I haven't seen my family in over 2 years and while that is okay for past reasons, I do miss my niece a lot. She is 6 years old and we talk regularly.
I don't know if it was due to a recent young death in the family, but this year I felt like finally going back to my native country for a few days. Unfortunately it's holiday season, which makes everything way expensive... and got my niece (and me, I confess) excited. We made some plans, but life got in the way and I'm not able to go due to financial reasons. I'm an ol'd school immigrant, meaning I'm not here for studies or a big ass corporate job, so I'm really tight on money and opportunities. Those got even tighter recently unlike we thought it would happen. I also cannot work due to disability.
Now, I didn't tell directly I was going there. I said I was thinking of it and looking for flights. I didn't say this to my niece but to my mother and apparently the I'M-GOING-message reached my niece.
I'm feeling a wreck right now. Growing up, we didn't have a good relationship and one of the issues I had with my parents was the whole getting-your-hopes-up-while-actually-knowing-that-you-won't-get-whatever-it-was-promised-ever shenanigans. I don't want to do the same with my niece, even though it wasn't intentional. I'm also really sad for myself because I wish I could go there for a few days soon.
How would you relay a message like that to a kid and what options would you try to figure it out?
