2021.12.06 08:15 WillTook (Request) how would you describe my ideology?

Maybe I should preface this by noting that I'm from a small, post-socialist Central European country, but in a true European spirit, I'll be talking mainly about America as if I knew how to fix it. And also, I'm kind of doing this on a whim and not putting too much thought into it, I could make a far better case for my personal views than this.
Economics
I generally believe in a mixed market economy with regulation where needed (especially when it comes to issues of health and safety). I'm very pro-small business and think it should be not only easy, but also encouraged for people to start their own businesses. I find the concept of private property extremely important. Though at the same time I'm highly skeptical of large corporations and I'm certainly not opposed to using state power for breaking up corporate monopolies. I place a high degree of value on healthcare and education and think both should be free, i.e. people should be taxed in order for everyone to have access to "free" healthcare and education. Anything is better than what the US currently has. I'm also pretty protectionistic, I think a nation should put its economic interests first. The deindustrialization of America in the late 20th century is the greatest tragedy in American history since the Civil war. I place a lot of value on environmentalism and conservation as well.
Government
In an ideal world, I would support a sort of anarchistic society. But this is not real world. Truly small government can only work in small societies with a high degree of social cohesion, and that is certainly not modern America. In America a relatively strong government is needed. A relatively strong government that should nonetheless fully and completely respect the rights and privacy of its citizens, and under which an individual always comes first. I believe the true problem with the government is corruption and the interests of large corporations, and if we focused on fixing those issues we wouldn't have to worry about "big government". Though again, the rights of the individual are paramount.
Social issues and religion
I'm generally a pretty libertarian person, do whatever you want as long as you don't bother anyone else. And sure. But at the same time, I am a big believer in morality, and that some kinds of behavior should be strongly discouraged by people. The values I idolize are strength, honesty, hard work and compassion. Witnessing a society that doesn't strongly value these things is regretful. I firmly believe in the quote "the most extraordinary thing in the world is an ordinary man and an ordinary woman and their ordinary children". There is nothing nobler someone can do than to be a decent person and bring up decent children. Family values are extremely important and precisely what holds society together, and anything that threatens it in any way should be treated with utmost condemnation (this doesn't include LGBTQ+ rights, I don't think a decent same-sex couple is any different from a decent heterosexual couple). The basic values of Western Christianity form most of the buildings blocks of Western civilization, as well as the modern "neoliberal" world order, which is by far the best, most peaceful, and most prosperous time to be alive in the entire world, and as such should be held in high regard. I do believe in freedom of religion, but at the end of the day, America and European countries were built upon Western Christianity, and it is foolish to pretend otherwise.
Civilization
As I have alluded to, I believe in the concept of Western civilization (which I define as traditionally Catholic or Protestant cultures) and I see myself as a proud member of it. I find the relatively recent phenomenon of discrediting everything the West has accomplished, as well as the very idea of the West, quite concerning, to say the least. It's a lot easier to view the world through the lens of "oppressor-victim" than to actually think critically and realize how complex history is and that nothing is black and white. Though on the other hand, it's even easier to think "we good, they bad".
Law and order
I have a high degree of respect for justice, and firmly believe in the rule of law. I support relatively strict punishments for criminals, but think everyone should be equally treated with respect and decency while in prison and in court, regardless of whether they deserve it or not. I don't believe in "cruel or unusual punishments", and consider capital punishment as such. Like I said before, I strongly believe in free speech, and I also believe in the right to bear arms, but with sensible regulation.
Democracy
A society without democracy is nothing. Simple as. I fully recognize the faults of democracy, but I believe it to be mandatory for a moral society. A poor, but free and democratic society will always be inherently better than a rich, but undemocratic one (though obviously democracy and wealth correlate quite well, for like a million reasons). That's not to say I'm opposed to (constitutional) monarchism, as I see it as a noteworthy relic from the past, at least in the case of Western societies (I'm not even pretending not to be biased).
I think that should do it, I have pretty strong opinions, but I'm a moderate person and willing to hear different perspectives and accept criticism.

2021.12.06 08:15 BooRadleyBoo Somewhere safe to build up some speed on the bike for anaerobic exercise.

I've been cycling a route to and from work for a while (even when not actually working on campus). It's approximately a 16km round trip which isn't too bad in terms of a cycle out.
The issue I'm having is that due to shared paths, and short cycle lanes, along with traffic lights it's basically impossible to really work up to a fulfilling exercise.
I'm based in Newtown and wonder if there might be somewhere nearby, or a route, where I could get a good uninterrupted cycle with little in the way of obstacles?
Probably asking too much but thought it worth a punt.

2021.12.06 08:15 Stephen_Morgan Issues with the upcoming UK ban on "pestering" women

In response to the mainstream media's hysterical panic over the incredibly low rate of violent crime against women, here in the UK, the government have decided to introduce an incredibly draconian law against, seemingly, everything. The Law Commission report is a couple of weeks away so we don't have exact specifics yet, but the government have said they wish to ban photographic people without their consent; rubbing against women on public transport, catcalling, leering, asking women for their contact details, cornering women, &c.; and, inciting hatred against women.
Firstly, a ban on photographic people without their consent means an end to all public photography, an end to investigative journalism - the al-jazeera sting on the UK's Israel lobby would become illegal to repeat - and an end to recording police who abuse their power. All nominally a response to the Sarah Everard killing, which was committed by a member of the police force who was pretending to perform an arrest, allegedly. Photographic police misconduct becoming a criminal offence would only increase the risk of such actions, so a normal piece of Tory-feminist authoritarianism.
The policing of male beaviour towards women is obviously meant to be the sugar to help the authoritarianism go down, and some of it might initially seem reasonable, but all of that is already illegal. You can't threaten someone, or physically prevent them from leaving a place. So what does a ban on "cornering" mean? Hopefully it means nothing, but it could also mean that any woman feeling intimidated would then be a victim of a crime. Sexually assaulting women on public transport is already illegal, so why a discrete ban against rubbing upon women on public transport? Either no reason beyond marketing the bill to feminists, or it will become illegal to be pushed into a woman on a crowded tube train. As for a ban on leering, that's just looking at a woman the wrong way.
Finally, a ban on incitement to hatred specifically against women. I don't think there's any widespread hatred of women, whereas it's hard to be on the internet without experiencing the normalisation of misandry, through #killallmen and all the other "ironic" misandry, and through activism from TERFs and other radical feminists. More recently, also through the mainstream media's post-Everard freakout. Misandry also has more serious impacts, especially on children and marginalised men. It contributes to mistreatment leading to lack of educational attainment, it influences violent crime rates and rates of suicide, and it leads to laws like this.

My opinion is that Max Verstappen is the better driver this season because he has more wins 9 (Hamilton 8) more DNF’s (Did Not Finish) 3:1 for Verstappen and also the FIA is helping Hamilton in every possible way and i think that be deserves to be world champion. This is just my opinion I would like to hear yours.
